Hurricane Helene Relief Outreach

Waxhaw Bible Church has already sent one team to the western NC area to take on relief work in the wake of hurricane Helene.

Sign up below to join a future work trip!

Jeff removes debris from a downed tree. Since that first trip, the work has moved from demolition to reconstruction.

VERY IMPORTANT!

This page is your “home base” for everything about joining a work team as well as keeping up with new developments about our church’s relief outreach events. Waxhaw Bible Church aspires to send regular teams to the Helene-impacted areas over the next years of need, so please visit here often.

There are two “roles” that a team member may fill on these work trips:

  • Construction (framing, electrical, plumbing, etc) and
  • Team-Support (admin, transportation, meals, housing support, childcare, social activities, etc).

One person doing both roles is logistically difficult and actually hinders overall work progress. Males (17 and up) and females (14 and up) with the appropriate skills can contribute to a team. In some cases younger children can accompany both parents with the advance approval of the team leader.

We encourage families to participate as a unit. In the system we’re using, the person who does the registration of each affiliated person is the “registrant” and those whom he/she registers are “attendees”. The registrant will click a button below to start the registration process.

Waxhaw Bible Church (WBC) uses an online system, called Planning Center (PC), to implement the registration mechanism and store the data needed by the work team. The system will gather contact, skill and other information from each registrant and attendee, and store it for use on any future work trip. Your information is ONLY available to WBC. It will never be sold, given away or passed on to any party outside WBC.

PLEASE call Ken Wienecke at 704-301-3576 or write him if you need help with registration.
Jeff Weir (704-517-4031 or email) is the team leader.

PLEASE read this section before doing anything because the process is not trivial. If you’d prefer to sign up by phone, please call Ken at the number above. To register for a work trip online, you as registrant must complete the following steps in order on this page:

  1. Determine if you will bring along any attendees, and gather ahead of time birthday and contact information for them.
  2. Decide which role you as registrant want.
  3. Query each attendee about the role he/she desires.
  4. Gather the contact and skill information for yourself and your attendees.
  5. Click the button below which corresponds to the work trip for which you are registering. A new web page will open in the online PC system, and the registration process will begin.

When you have submitted your information via the pop-up form, the system will send you an email recapping your submission and giving you a link which will post it in the WBC-subscribed system where it will live. Before moving to the next Step, please check your email and confirm the posting. Your supplied skill information is now retained and will apply to any trip for which you register during this or any other future session.

  • With your information supplied in Step 2, you can now actually register for a work trip below by clicking the “Register for this trip” button. This will launch the following process:
  • You will be taken to a page prompting you for your mobile number. A code will be texted to you that you will need in the next step which creates an account on a system used by WBC. You have the option to use an email address to get the code, but getting the code by text will likely be easier. You will be taken to the next page.
  • If your account already exists, you will be prompted to allow you to log into it. If it does not already exist, you will be prompted for your first and last name (which is enough to create that account). You will be taken to the next page.
  • This page has three sections: Selections, Attendees and Review

You can register yourself and others as well (family members, etc) using the button below. This will take you away from this page, after which you should be returned here.

May 14-17 (Thursday-Saturday), Spruce Pine NC

You and your team leader Jeff Weir will work under the direction of the Baptists On Mission (BOM), based in Spruce Pine. Hundreds of homes across Mitchell County NC are as yet unusable. At the present moment, housing looks the same as our first trip: sleeping on cots in various rooms of Spruce Pine First Baptist Church, but that could change by the time we get there. Until further notice, you must bring your own cot and bedding. This kind of lodging is not well suited to families, so we will restrict the team members to people bringing construction skills.

In the past, our team was fed by Spruce Pine First Baptist church. The church will continue to prepare and serve our three daily meals in its fellowship hall, but food costs are now such that a $20/person/day fee is required of work-team members. This fee will be collected either by the online registration system or, if you prefer, a check made payable to Waxhaw Bible Church.

BOM requires that its own form be filled out by every team member, and the registration mechanism will make this form available to registrants and attendees during the registration process.

June 16-21 (Monday-Saturday), Mountain City TN

You and your team leader Jeff Weir will work under the direction of First Christian Church, Mountain City TN. There are 80 residential projects needing help, some repair/renovation and some rebuilds from the ground up. Worker housing and meals (and WiFi!) will be provided in RVs (and tents?) on the property of team leader Jeff Weir. Life might be simpler if team members could bring a sleeping bag, but it’s not required.

This trip is well suited for families, resembling a camping trip. There are separate bathrooms for men and women, a large dining tent and housing provided by several RVs and even tents. At the moment, we must limit the team to 20 people total, children included.

A $5/person/day fee (which is subsidized by previously-donated funds) is required of all team members, including children. This fee will be collected either by the online registration system or, if you prefer, a check made payable to Waxhaw Bible Church.
